Berkeley South Branch Library
Berkeley, CAThe maker movement is thriving in Berkeley! One of the unique features of the new South Branch Library is the tool lending library, a beloved community feature which started in a trailer on this site in 1979. Whereas the former library turned inward, the new branch opens out to the street and adds 50% more usable space. At the core, a 20-foot tall, linear browsing room shares daylight and natural cooling with all three reading rooms - adults, children and teens. The tool library, always a busy place, occupies a separate section of the building for ease of access and to minimize disruption to the quieter browsing room.

Tesoro Viejo Town Center
Madera County, CaliforniaThe Hub, the Axis Coffee Shop and Eatery and a Madera County Fire Station form part of the first phase of the town center of this new family-oriented master-planned community. Inspired by the rich agricultural tradition of the region, the building design is based on an imagined history of the site as it could have evolved over time, from a simple farmstead to a large Hacienda that would have eventually been converted into its present use. Large roof overhangs create shady and inviting places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or a simple breakfast or lunch. The Hub also acts as the Welcome Center for the community, featuring exhibits that illustrate the history of the region and the details of the masterplan, and includes a small office suite. Inside the building, large exposed metal trusses and a roof skylight reinforce the barn-like feel of the space. The Hub and Axis Coffee Shop and adjacent Fire Station will eventually grow into a multi-block town center that will form the commercial heart and soul of this community.
